This is definitely off-topic, but still interesting for those fans who cheer for the Buckeyes and/or Bengals. Carson Palmer, the Bengals quarterback who was drafted out of USC, was not at all hesitant to let his true feelings show when an LA-based sports radio station (KLAC) asked about his loyalties in college football. The interview took place Thursday, July 17th, when Carson was in Los Angeles for Matt Leinart’s charity bowling event. Listen to his comments below.
Those people! Those people! A hope a Buckeye fan hits him in the head with a horseshoe. If he wants to talk about arrogant fans, he should look to his own house. USC may have some of the most annoying fans in sports. The sense of entitlement and inability to accept that they didn’t “three-peat” or even “two-peat” is disgusting.
Update (7/21): So I didn’t really put a lot of time into this story, because I primarily write on the Cavaliers, but I certainly can’t say I expected the uproar that came of it (due in large part to Fanhouse bringing my audio to the people). The fallout from this little Cavaliers blog is all over the media today. I turned on the station I heard Carson on (KLAC) only to hear Jim Rome talking about it (which I’ve linked below). Then throughout the day I’ve been receiving more people trying to spam the comments thread with dong pill advertisements then ever before. Right now, Bill Plaschke of the L.A. Times is on the air in Los Angeles with Don MacLean (former UCLA Bruin) railing on the Big Ten about how inferior their conference is to the Pac-10. They’re just filling in for the guys who started this whole mess and then took vacation (Petros & Money). Below I’ll post the littany of links to people killing Carson Palmer in the media and/or turning this story into a pissing match of Pac-10 versus Big Ten football.
I’d be the first to kill Carson in a less sarcastic manner then I did above (and yes, my “you people” rant was sarcasm), except as a Cavs fan, I was disgusted at the same treatment the media gave Lebron James when he wore the Yankee hat to an Indian game. I have to say, regardless of my appreciation of Ohio State or my relative distaste for USC football and how it’s covered here in Los Angeles, the way some fans tend to believe that professional athletes aren’t entitled to hold on to their favorite teams, or maintain a rooting interest is a little ridiculous.
Being paid to compete in sports doesn’t eliminate the sense of loyalties that you built up while still an amateur, or even as a child. I would hope more athletes held on to loyalties and some element of what made sports enjoyable for them, not just become mercenaries who give politically correct answers to everyone and anyone. Stuff like what Carson said is half the reason I love sports radio to begin with.
Update (7/23): Yep, Carson ended up backing off his statement considerably. From the Sporting News:
“I’m a Trojan all the way, and I was talking to a Trojan audience in California. I guess I got a little fired up, as all good fans will do. But I really do respect the Buckeyes, and I know their fans are passionate, too.
“I hope they all understand I’m just looking forward to a big game for my school against a very tough opponent, and that it’s all in the good fun of a rivalry. You don’t have a real rivalry unless both sides are great teams.”
Way to bow to the media pressure Carson. Regardless of what he said, no statement is going to calm down the hate that diehard Buckeye fans will be spewing at Palmer for the rest of his career.

So there I was, sitting in the Sports Book at the Suncoast Casino in Las Vegas with my wife, one week before the highly anticipated ‘03 BCS game between USC and Texas. I couldn’t help notice a large group of loud, obnoxious, loud, and did I say obnoxious yet?…obvious “south-siders” from The City of Angels hanging out by the bar, sippin’ on malt liquor. All was cool, until one of the thugsters noticed my wife’s Buckeyes t-shirt. And then the mouthing began, naturally. And I held my own, I must admit, 12 to 1, even telling one one of the loudest of the blowhards, “watch me as I go over and plunk down a couple “C” notes on…the Horns”. And that’s exactly what I did. And they promised to return the following week to watch the game…and watch me collect my winnings. Of course my wife and I went back…and there was not one single Trojan fan to be seen…anywhere…except out in the parking lot as they were seen removing their little Trojan banners from their hoop-dees. This year it’s Buckeye Time!

In the interest of fun and games, camaraderie and sportsmanship, manhood and ego, Carson should back up that trash talking with a little wager. Perhaps he could give Troy Smith a call – do some OSU/USC jersey trading for the loser of the wager, to be worn during warm-ups of the Bengals vs. Ravens game in Cincinnati. (While I can’t speak for Troy, it would be interesting to see the two icons of their respective programs, and Heisman winners, make this wager. I would be willing to do it, but I don’t think it would have nearly the hype – I’m just an OSU alumnus and current OSU graduate student.) Perhaps make it even more interesting. If he does, in fact, get to come to the OSU/USC game next year at the ‘Shoe, he could place a wager on his apparel for that day, too. What I don’t understand about all this arguing over one silly little comment is when everyone disses on OSU just because of our athletics. First off, being a recent OSU graduate and die-hard Buckeyes fan, no one I know thinks or talks like our buddy Sean up there. (July 21, 2008 at 10:52 pm). Take some goddamn pills or something man, you’re making us look like idiots.
I’ll be out in Cali for the game, and personally I can’t freakin wait to see the battle go down on September 13th. As much winning history as these two teams share, it should be a great game.

I laugh when people say that the Big Ten should be embarrassed and assume that Buckeye take offense. Not many Buckeye fans will fight over the fact that the Big Ten is better than any division at this point. In saying that the BIG TEN, as a whole, is better would be ridiculous but saying that the Buckeyes are one of the top teams isn’t. We had our asses handed to us in Florida, no one will deny that, but Florida was a good team, we weren’t prepared, and someone had to lose that game right? And against LSU? We shouldn’t have even made it that far, we had a BRAND NEW team, Buckeye fans were just hoping to beat Michigan at that point, most had threw the thought of a NC game away before the season ever started. But every team that was above us and below us for that matter started dropping like flies, lucky? Well hell yes. Deserved? To a point, we held our own against crappy teams even when top teams were losing to theirs. Will we take it? Hell yes. Sure we lost, but I’d rather lose the NC game then win any other bowl. This is a very weird subject for me. I absolutely love the Buckeyes more than any other team but Carson is also my favorite NFL player. Man, you tOSU fans crack me up. For some of you, the even minded ones, you can tell you graduated from tOSU, and for that I commend you. I, also, commend you on your comments about Carson, and how you are reasonable.
For those of you that say you graduated, or are just fans of the Buckeyes, please don’t claim you graduated from there if, one, you can’t spell words correctly, and two, you type things my 8 year old would correct.

I don’t know why people from other states love to come down on California, the fans, and how we are “allegedly” gay. WTF? We have the beach, we have beautiful weather, we have great sports teams, and we have the HOTTEST women crawling all over the place here. I understand people from Ohio may be jealous because, you have fat, ugly women, and you have bad weather, but why take it out on us? The fact remains, USC is going to beat tOSU on September 13th because they are a fast team at every position and tOSU has had problems dealing with fast teams (see the last two NC games for examples). Not to mention, the Buckeyes have a QB that isn’t mobile and a QB that stands in the pocket against USC’s defense is a QB that is going to get smashed in the mouth on more than one occasion, just ask Juice and the ASU QB.
Beanie is a talent (and probably the best RB in the game for both sides), and I predict he will have over 100 yards and one big gainer during the game, but he will be the only offense for the Buckeyes. As for tOSU having the best LB in the nation? I would have to say that USC has TWO LB’s that are better in Cushing and Rey Rey. I don’t know how fast Laurinaitis
is, but Cush and Rey both run around a 4.5 forty, and had Cush been healthy all year, he would have made several AA teams.
I can’t wait for the game, both teams are historically great, and since we haven’t seen each other in the Rose for a number of years due to the BCS, it was a great idea for both the teams to meet. Let’s hope for a great game, and that no one gets hurt.

With that said, I do agree that USC has LBs that are at the top of the nation in talent. They could do a number on Boeckman as he gets panicky when the pocket is collapsing. It will be interesting to see how the coaching staff reacts with QB/ATH Terrell Pryor (6′6″, 235, 4.4) on the sideline. He could stretch the defense with a wrinkle play here or there.
I disagree with the “speed” argument, I believe what you mean is the type of offense. OSU has had repeated trouble against the spread/WCO. The Defense has trouble preparing for it due to their lack of exposure to it during the regular season. This became apparent against Illinois, Florida, LSU. It’s not that they are slow. I don’t buy that argument. The big programs recruit from the same group of speed players. It comes down to an offensive scheme/set matched with a defense that is not used to see it except once a year.
Overall it will be a close game, no matter what the fanatics from either side say. The boys who make a living on making the lines in Vegas have it at less than a touchdown in the home teams favor.

Someone in a public position like Mr. Palmer should know better than to spout off like he did due to the large amounts of press generated by comments such as his. And since he chose to say what he did, he should at least be man enough to stand by his words…his halfassed apology won him no favors and as I said before gave him zero credibility. If he had stood by his comments then at least he would deserve some respect for being honest. If there were any truth to his excuse of being fired up for the game, his comments would have been quite different. Hell, he could have used some funny jokes, I would have laughed.
